Gering Nebraska History: A Comprehensive Review
Traveling through Nebraska brings numerous interesting historical destinations, with Gering ranking high among the list. Located three miles east of Scottsbluff, Gering boasts a rich and storied past that began to take shape in the latter half of the 19th century. The arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad brought the first wave of settlers, with many attracted to the region by the area's promising agricultural prospects.
Gering itself was officially founded in 1887 and was named after a Boston investor named Charles Henry Gering. Under the United States Land Office open policy, it became a prime location for irrigation projects and farming due to the presence of nearby water sources. However, water from the North Platte River was seasonal and inconsistent. Thus, construction on the canal project 'Scotts Bluff Irrigation District' was undertaken in 1889. Spanning nearly 20 miles, this canal connects the town with waters from nearby diverting streams to irrigate sugar beets. A part of it resides in Gary Bailey Lookout Point park in East Over Mountain Road off Highway 156 right behind the downtown Gering area facing the beautiful Scotts Bluff.
To cater to growing settlers coming in due to fertile land, a bridge eventually replaced the old water ferry crossing the North Platte. Over years of progress with the bridges, the area offered new paths of travel like the Iowa Road '1882.' Gering became registered on 1887 with Washington County, showing that there was some 'progress'. Indeed 1890 finished year 1888 plat registered as a village of Washington despite an overall 1902, due north to and originally attached with, Scott Bluffs (National geographic and land). 'Panhandle' reference called its neighbor to our north and those north of 'Bluffs district North' itself to their sister 'Twin cities 1890 Bluffs'.
